Empowering teens to be difference-makers in their community through the arts

SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!

It means that TALK helps teens understand how things get done! Teens gain experience planning and implementing events such as art shows, concerts, festivals, plays, etc.

It's great that there are adult-designed programs for kids to be involved in. However, as kids age and start to have ideas and opinions of their own, it's time that they learn how to guide their actions and explore how they can actually create positive change in their communities and the world.  Of course, there are some skills and areas that teens don't always understand. For these areas, they will need adult assistance and that is where TALK steps in.

TALK's Adult Mentors let the teens "drive" while providing only suggestions and ideas. From there, teens with ideas are assisted in taking those ideas to reality.   Teens are engaged in all segments of putting on an event, from brainstorming ideas, to hammering out all the details.  Some ideas take root, flourish, and are delivered.  Others may not get wings and fly, which can be discouraging, but also a valuable learning experience.

There are three paths a teen can jump onto while engaged with TALK:

1) Leadership - Teens can be a part of the leadership team, in which they can join committees to develop, plan, and execute events that TALK agrees to implement. These members can also be contributors.

2) Contributor - Teens can include their art in exhibitions, perform in a play, or play their music at an event that was developed by the aforementioned leadership teens.

3) Helping/Assistance - Teens can help out at events. Sometimes these teens need encouragement or they may just be checking things out and are still trying to decide where they fit in with TALK.  This means they can be involved as little or as much as they like and TALK's adult mentors will work with them wherever they are at.
